  1. Chapter 8 made me think of the many people in my life who inspire me, the people I seek out to gain wisdom from, and the numerous individuals that I will encounter in the future that will help me learn. The five stories "illustrated the wisdom and power of people who have opened their hearts to the will of God." How cool!

  2. I agree with Abby there certainly are people in our own lives that inspire us. It is important that we also think about the lives we inspire each day in our teaching. We are helping to develop our students' minds each day in school.
I thought it was very interesting that people were able to sense the truth, goodness, and guidance of God himself through the preaching and advice of John Vianney. Mother Teresa is person that makes me think of my mother. My mom was always making sacrifices for others. No she wasn't poor, but she didn't throw what money she had around. She would go out of her way to help others. She would often made homemade rolls for many people she encountered. You often find my mom sitting at the table praying for people. My mom loved and genuinely cared about all the students she taught and all the people she came into contact with. She helped many of her students that needed warm clothes in the winter, breakfast before school, school supplies, and even sending food home to their families if they were in need. My mom is an inspiration for me to follow. Like St. Teresa my mom had the power to love, the strength to endure, and the gift to inspire through her silence and her prayerful ways.

  3. I am going to also agree with Abby and Deb. There are many people who inspire us each day and that we are hopefully inspiring our students as well.
I found the 5 stories interesting to read. The struggles they encountered and how they did not give up in what they believed in. The last part that caught my attention was taking the Gospel seriously and how my life will unfold if I begin to take the life and teachings of Jesus seriously as those I read about in this chapter that opened their hearts to the will of God.

  4. Debbie thank you for sharing what you did about your mom. I am sure she is your special angel in heaven and each day you try to emulate her. Isn't is special how each of us can see so much care and love in each of our moms!! My mom was truly like that and still is today. She sacrificed much in order to raise her 11 children. She still is a very loving and giving person. The stories in the chapter were fabulous and inspiring to all. My two favorite are St. Francis of Assi and Mother Teresa. As Patty mentioned above-- it is important to take the teaching of the gospel seriously and help it to allow you to grow.

  5. After reading the five inspirational stories in the eighth chapter, I was amazed to hear how each of the people became the best-version-of-themselves. It is inspiring to learn how these people reached out to others and made a difference in the world. The one that really inspired me was Mother Teresa. The first thing that stuck out to me was how some people lived in Calcutta. I can’t imagine seeing the things she saw everyday. The images that were described were extremely sad. The way she reached out and treated the people was amazing. She genuinely loved and cared about every person she came in contact with. I love how Mother Teresa said, “Every person is Christ for me, and since there is only one Jesus, the person I am meeting is the one person in the world at that moment.” What an amazing way to view other people! She definitely followed God by loving others as He loves us. By showing love, serving others, and putting God at the center of her life, she led an authentic life. Even though her story really impressed me, I believe that all five of the stories were very inspirational.

  6. I found the five stories about these inspirational people very interesting. It makes sense to look up to these people as role models. It also made me think that as a teacher I need to be a role model for my students, or "introduce" them to people who could be their role models. Reading this chapter also made me think of a few students that I have had in the past and how kind-hearted they were. I hope to meet/see some of these former students many years from now, when they are grown adults.

  7. It was totally fascinating to read these stories about such influential and inspiring people. It also kind of changed my attitude about reading this book. We all know that we're totally busy, and sometimes reading and blogging about this book is just one more task to do on an already long list. I don't usually pick up biographies, but because I "had" to do this assignment, I was inspired by their stories that I otherwise would have missed out on. So maybe I just need to approach my "to do" list a little differently. Instead of all the things being one more task to accomplish, I need to focus more on the importance of each thing I do. Some may be for my own betterment, some may be to reach out to the lives of others, but everything has its purpose whether we see it or not.

  8. I too have made the statement: "I wish I was younger and knew what I know now." As of late, I have not stopped to think about who inspires me or who are my heros or role models probably since High school Psychology class. People who I have observed and attempted to apply their wisdom into my own life have for the most part been past teachers and coaches. Some certainly embedded a memory of someone who wanted to better themselves and make the world a better place.
I'd like to think that that too is my goal!!!

  9. This chapter also made me think about who my role models are and who inspires me as well. This is not often something I really think about and no name in particular sticks out to me, but anytime I see or hear of someone doing something that they receive no reward for, those are the people I look up to. I think about all that they are doing for others while not worrying about themselves and I just hope that I can even be a little bit like that. I don't always remember what they did nor do I even remember their names most of the time, but I remember they are doing wonderful things for others and not always putting themselves first and I always hope that I am doing that sometimes as well.

  10. These stories make me realize how many role models we all have in our lives, if we just take the time to get to know people's stories and lives. It is easy to overlook the good deeds that people do around us every day or take for granted the generosity of someone in our lives, but when we reflect on these things it becomes quite easy to see all of the examples of good around us!

  11. I really enjoyed chapter 8 and reading about 5 amazing people who lived authentic lives. I have to agree with Abby and Deb about wanting to surround ourselves with people who inspire us and remembering those who have inspired us in the past. It truly is a gift to find those people who think of others, while being true to themselves and God.

  12. The first part of this chapter discussed role models. This chapter made me think about my Reflective Educator class that I took this summer. We discussed the people and experiences who made us into who we are today. Through this class, I came into the realization that who I am today is because of the role models in my life. I first and foremost always think of my parents. They taught me the morals, values and work ethic that I have today. I also think of the strong Catholic upbringing I had because of my parents, grandparents and extended family. I grew up with a strong family life helped me to become the person I am today. The only hope to the younger generation of my family is that they develop the same qualities I did because of the positive role models in their life.

  13. WoW!! What an awesome chapter. Learning about these inspirational people gave me a great deal to reflect upon. I also thought about the people who have inspired me and help mold who I am today. It is my hope that I can have an inspirational effect on some of the students that have walked in and out of my classroom.

  14. In the passage about Mother Teresa, it talks about how difficult it was for her to rest when she is ill. I see this in many on the people in my life. They struggle to take the time to take care of themselves when they are sick. Sometimes there are people who feel it is a weakness to ask for help, but I think you should do so when it is needed.

  15. I enjoyed reading the five stories of such inspiring people. My favorite was Mother Teresa. It made me think about all those who have inspired me and what I can do in my life to possibly inspire others. I want to be around people who are inspiring!
