In chapter 9 it stated that the will of God is to be the best version of yourself that you can be. I think this is something we all strive to do. It is very important that we always do our best in everything we do. We need to align ourselves with the will of God and experience his love. Chapter 10 caught my attention and made me think about friendship. "A true friend brings the best out of her friend." I know this is very true of my friend Julie. She has been there for me through thick and thin. No matter what happens she is there for me and I am there for her. We have a wonderful relationship. We are also very lucky that our husbands get along so well. Through our friendship we are each striving to better ourselves.
What sets us apart from others? The title caught my eye and made me sit back and think of what my goal in life is and if the will of God is to become the best version of myself. What are my habits? Are my habits helping me to become the best version of myself or do I need to for some new habitst in life. Such big questions to think about. Friendship is a wonderful thing. I have friends who are always striving to better themselve and that gets me excited. The comment a true friend brings the best out of her friends caught my eye. These are the people who inspire me, challenge me and make me want to be a better person.
When I read the ninth chapter, it made me think of my ultimate goal in life. As I began thinking, I thought of many goals. I want to show love and kindness to everyone and live an optimistic, happy life. When I do tasks, I want to use my full potential. I want to be the best wife, mother, daughter, sister, and teacher that I know how to be. The list could go on and on. If I had to narrow all of my goals down to one goal, I would say my goal is to be all that I can be. The next thing the chapter discussed was our habits, which made me think about mine. There are many things I do that help me to reach my ultimate goal, but there are some things that don’t. Overall, they are things that I need to work on to help me become a better person and help me attain my goal in life.
When I read the tenth chapter, it made me think about how many true friends I actually have. Even though I love all of my friends, there were a few that really stuck out to me as the book’s definition of true friends. I thought about how I feel when I am with them; they make me want to be a better person. I agree with the quote in the book, “Goodness is contagious.” When we see someone doing something good or that is right, we also want to do good things. As teachers, I believe that we have a very important role in our students’ lives in this aspect. Not only do they learn a lot of information from us, but they are also influenced by our habits and how we live our lives. If we strive to do good things, we will make a positive difference in our students’ lives.
Being the best version of yourself that you can be is really tough sometimes! I've been trying to be the best teacher I can be for my students, as well as be there for my coworkers who have the same joys and frustrations with the kids that we share and the lives that we touch. I've been trying to be the best mom and dad to Jenna that I can be, never letting her see how scared I am that her dad may never come home again. I've been trying to be the best wife I can be, doing the work of 2 people and not letting Rich know how stressed out it's making me. I've been trying to be the best daughter I can be, trying to be there for my mom as we approach the one year anniversary of my dad's death. The problem is, I've been trying to be the best I can be alone. God is there to help me, but I don't turn to him nearly often enough. My friends are there for me, but I don't turn to them because I don't want to be a burden--being the best version of me is being there for them instead. So Debbie, I'm sorry that I turned down your help--any time you want to cut my grass or fold my towels, feel free to come over! (Insert smiley face here!)
Everything I thought of writing left my brain as I read your response, Sandy! It takes a lot of courage and strength to accept help, even when it is clearly a time when you deserve every bit of assistance to just make it through one day! You are an inspiration to me, how you come to school with a positive attitude and help your students without fail, day in and day out, while going through such a difficult time. You have a lot on your plate right now, but you are the first to step up and suggest helping others when the situation arises. That is one of the ways you are truly being the best version of yourself! Giving selflessly and asking for nothing in return. It's the Sandy Fiedler way, and those around you notice it! Don't ever be afraid to ask for help with *anything*-- know that you are doing it to be the best version of yourself : )
I have to totally agree with Sandy! Being the best version of yourself is very difficult! I think that everyone struggles to be the best version of themselves in at least one facet of their lives and some even struggle to be the best version of themselves for every facet of their lives. I feel like it is a constant struggle to be the best teacher and wife that I can be. I feel like I have to be good at one or the other because they both take so much time and effort. Not that I am complaining because I love being a teacher and a wife, it is just difficult to be the best version of yourself in all parts of life. I also feel like making sure to include God in my life is part of being the best version of myself and I would have to agree that I also do not probably turn to him enough either. I always feel like I should pray for others and not for myself because it feels selfish. I think this is just one of those things that will always be a struggle but as long as we are tying and giving 100% to be the best we can be, we have to know that that is enough.
When I read Chapter 9 the one phrase that I kept hearing was "the best version of myself" It made me stop and thing in the following days about my activities and decisions. How was I striving to be the best version of myself and what decisions were selfish and looking only for the good of myself. In Chapter 10 the phrase that hit me was "Goodness is contagious" If we are role models, those around us can work to the goodness of the world. However as we all know, the opposite is also possible. We must strive each day to use goodness to help us make our life decisions.
When I read chapter 9,I took pause at the following sentences: "The will of God is that you become the-best-version-of-yourself. God doesn't want to control you, or manipulate you, or stifle you, or force you to do things you don't want to do. If that were God's desire, then he would not have given you free will in the first place." Many have the belief that being a person of faith is being a "hostage", but after reading those sentences, it brings being a faith-filled person into perspective that it is all part of being the best version of yourself. I do agree with Sandy and Megan that it can be very difficult though! Where do you "draw the lines" so that you can give the best to your students, to your spouse, to your children, to your friends, and especially God?
I am going to echo the "become the best version of yourself" theme that kept speaking to me. I started to become interested in the saints and have found some amazing stories. We have been reading about them in our classroom and the kids can't get enough! I'll need a lot of help from God to become the best version of myself, and that will only come with prayer. It's good to have goals!
I thought it was interesting when the book talked about habits. It stated that our habits create character and and our character is our destiny. I suppose that if you do look at your habits and the things you do in your daily life, you can get a good sense of what kind of person you are. I also thought it was interesting that it said if you weren't happy with how things were, habits are easy to change; therefore changing your character. It really made me think of what kind of person I am and what kind of person I hope to be.
The activity at the end of Chapter 9 where you were to write down a list of what you do every day, every week or every month; therefore your habits was tough. It was a powerful chapter as its premise was --if we want our future to be different from our past, we must change our habits as bad habits create misery in our future and good habits create good character and leads us to a wonderful future. Thank God we can change our habits! To be truly cognisant of our bad habits is very difficult especially when so many others around us partake in the same bad habits. Soon it appears to be acceptable to us but never to God. Opening ones heart to the will of God and forming good habits is clearly the path to take to become the best version of oneself. A prayer I pray daily--Come Lord Jesus, come and be born in my heart!
The idea that struck me most was in Chapter 10. I truely believe that you are a lucky person if you have a handful of friends. They really are the people who challenge you to be the best person can be, they are there for your successes and failures, and they are the people you call day or night in case you need something.
When the author stated that when you don't have this singleness of purpose, you get lost in the tossing and turning of daily life. Is it possible to have singleness of purpose? Being a wife, mother, daughter, sister, teacher, active member of my church and many of the other labels, it's hard for me to have a singleness of purpose, I guess I'm not sure how to do this. And yes, at times I feel like I am tossing and turning in daily life.
To be the best version of yourself was an important topic in the chapter. It makes me think of my goals and habits and whether or not they are allowing me to be the best version of myself. I like the phrase and agree that goodness is contagious, but so is evil. I will be taking the time to think about my decisions and put forth my best effort to make choices that say I am being the best version of me. How great would it be to be around inspiring people and people who are examples of good living.
